WSC Signs Contract
On 16-Dec-11, the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) and the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB) executed an $81Million loan contract, secured with a guarantee by the Government of The Bahamas.
- This loan contract focuses on New Providence and addresses four main areas of concern identified in the Corporate Business Plan and Strategic Sector Plan:
- The reduction of Non-Revenue Water (NRW)
- Institutional strengthening of WSC
- Rehabilitation and upgrade of wastewater infrastructure and preparation of a Wastewater Treatment Master Plan.
Update the regulatory framework for the sector
The NRW is by far the largest and arguably the most critical component of the loan program. WSC presently does not generate revenue from over 5Million imperial gallons of the water it supplies daily in New Providence. This is equivalent to over 50% in losses and is valued at nearly $16Million annually.
The procurement process for this activity began in 2009 and followed IDB procedures in anticipation of securing funding to be applied to the project. The process involved International Competitive Bidding with top firms from around the world participating and, following evaluation, resulted in Miya Water Projects Netherlands and Veritec Consulting Incorporated being the top-ranked firm.
