WSC Initial Assessment as Hurricane Irma Exits The Bahamas

Hurricane Irma PR Update No. 2

Nassau, Bahamas – The Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) wishes to provide the following updates to our valued customers and all residents of The Bahamas as to our initial assessments as Hurricane Irma exits The Bahamas.

1. New Providence (NP)

There was no interruption in the public water supply and there are no initial reports of any damage to our water production, pumping and supply systems. We have commenced an assessment of our sewerage systems with a focus on any facilities that may have lost power supply from the Bahamas Power and Light Co. Ltd. (BPL). Any facility without BPL power supply will be operated using our fleet of portable generators to prevent any possible sewage spillage.

2. Family Islands (FIs)

Initial Reports are that operations are presently normal or have been restored to normal in: –

A. Abaco

B. Cat Island

C. Eleuthera

D. Exuma including Black Point, Farmers Cay and Staniel Cay

E. Long Island

F. San Salvador

Teams are actively working to maintain/restore normal water supply, but facing challenging weather conditions, in: –

A. Acklins

B. Andros

C. Berry Islands

D. Bimini

E. Crooked Island

The water supply is presently off and operational staff have been evacuated from the locations listed below. All storage tanks on these islands were left full prior to the evacuations: –

A. Inagua

B. Long Cay

C. Mayaguana

D. Ragged Island

The Corporation wishes to publicly thank our extremely dedicated and hardworking teams who participated in the Hurricane Irma preparatory works, to those who were in place at our facilities during the passage of Hurricane Irma and to those who are now involved in the initial assessment and restoration works.

In the event any damage is observed to any WSC water or sewerage system, residents are asked to promptly report it to our Emergency Command Center at 302-5599 or 325-0505.
