Women’s Basketball Association Off to a Great Dunk!

Basketball is one of many great ways to play your way to success, and the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) is leading the way by jump-starting Nassau’s newest women’s basketball league.  The league is being spearheaded by one of WSC’s very own and is a great way to showcase more of the country’s female basketball talent.

WSC’s Employee Relations Manager, Mynez Cargill- Sherman, who reached out to the Corporation and its partners Miya Bahamas and Consolidated Water for sponsorship, is spearheading the newly-formed women’s junior basketball league.  WSC’s sponsorship will be helping the league to get started and encourage and support young women as they show off their basketball skills.

The league officially launched in early February at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium where former Deputy Prime Minister, Cynthia ‘Mother’ Pratt gave the opening address.

“We continued to see young women who may have a GPA of 2.50 to 3.3, but that GPA would not qualify them for an academic scholarship.” Mynez Cargill-Sherman explained, “However, if they have the ability to play basketball, it can create an avenue for obtaining higher learning via a basketball scholarship.”

Cargill-Sherman felt that the introduction of a junior basketball division for young ladies aged 11-18 was ideal as there is currently a call for more student-athletes.  WSC General Manager, Glen Laville, agreed, hence WSC’s decision to be the main sponsor for the league.

“The Corporation is pleased to support this newly formed young women’s basketball league,” said Visna Armbrister, WSC Public Affairs Manager.  “In doing so, the Corporation hopes that it would encourage young women to continue to engage in positive activities and make the best of their God-given talents recognizing that the ‘sky is the limit’ and that they should continue to stay focused and work hard to achieve their life’s goals.”

All games will be played at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium on Saturday evenings from 5pm – 8pm, and this season will run until May 2016.
