National Water Week is the Corporation’s major public relations event held annually. National Water Week started in May 1990 by the General Manager at the time, Mr. E. George Moss.
The primary objectives of National Water Week are:
-
To educate/inform the public of role of WSC in supplying the water needs of the Bahamas.
-
To educate/inform the public of the entire water supply and demand process in the Bahamas.
-
To educate/inform the public on water conservation – necessity to conserve/protect supply.
-
To familiarize the general public with WSC.
-
To encourage cohesive-ness and comradery among WSC employees.
In May of 2005, the Corporation celebrated its 15th year of National Water Week observances under the theme: ‘Past Challenges, New Solutions, Promising Future’.
This theme was chosen due to the Corporation’s struggles to regain normalcy after Hurricanes Jean and Francis due to the inundation of seawater impacting the well fields in North Andros and the ensuing problems with water shortages in New Providence. However, with great anticipation, the Corporation forges ahead as it slowly begins to rely less on barging water from North Andros to greater use of reverse osmosis technology. (See Reverse Osmosis for further information).

OPERATION HOME IMPROVEMENT
In a spirit of cooperation, togetherness and good will, and principally due to a dire need for this financially challenged corporation to enhance its work place for both staff and customers alike, top management, its unions and staff joined hands and resources to improve the physical appearance of the main office building on #87 Thompson Boulevard.
This initiative dubbed ‘Operation Home Improvement’ started on Saturday, 2nd October 2004 and continued each Saturday until work was completed. It involved all levels of the Corporation’s employees with varying skills who volunteered their time to give back to their company from 9am to 2pm. They carried out task such as painting, carpentry, masonry, gardening, and electrical work both inside and outside the building.
In addition to improving the building’s physical appearance, another objective of the project was to encourage comraderary and to form a stronger bond amongst top management, unions and staff. The project does not stop with the main building; these motivated and talented employees took their campaign to other WSC building sites. Furthermore, they were happy about saving the corporation money by becoming ‘do-it-yourselfers’, and after 5 hours of hard work, they would gather for a time of fun and fellowship.
Water and Sewerage Corporation is promoting a new corporate culture, where management and staff now understand that they both have a vested interest in the success of the company, and where it is clear that, “a company is only as good as its human resource”.
